Marblehead School Committee

  • Marblehead High School Library 2 Humphrey Street Marblehead, MA, 01945 United States (map)

The Marblehead School Committee is developing a draft policy that would permit only U.S., state and POW/MIA flags to be displayed in schools. The Committee will have the sole authority to ban any other flags, banners, and symbolic displays on school property. This would lead to the removal of Pride flags and Black Lives Matter and Juneteenth banners in schools.

At two previous School Committee meetings, students have spoken out unanimously against this effort to curtail their free speech and expression. And on March 19th, the Marblehead Education Association sent a letter to School Committee Chair Jenn Schaeffner strongly opposing the proposed policy.

This draft policy will be discussed at the next Marblehead School Committee and we encourage concerned residents to attend in person or join the meeting on Zoom. See further details here.

Further Actions (for Marblehead Residents Only):

  • Submit a letter to the editor in opposition to the policy to the Marblehead Current.

  • Email a letter to the School Committee in opposition to this policy.
