Letter from Jeff G.

April 13, 2026

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

With a heavy heart, I wanted to let you all know that I will be resigning as Treasurer and  Executive Committee member of NSI, as my family and I have decided to move back to our homeland of Canada. My wife has accepted a job at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, while I will be continuing to work in my current position in medical communications remotely from there.

This has been a very difficult decision for us. We felt that we had put down roots here on the North Shore, and envisioned staying here for the long term. We love this community, and Salem has been a wonderful home to us for the last few years. My wife however lost her job at Harvard University due to the withholding of funding by the Trump administration, and it has become much more difficult for her to secure a new position here than it was in the past. Although we were in the process of getting permanent residence in the US, the writing on the wall was that unfortunately in the immediate future we could no longer be guaranteed the stability we needed to support ourselves. In addition, moving to Ottawa puts us much closer to the support of our family in Canada.

We originally moved to the US from Canada in 2008, to pursue our careers in biomedical research. We first arrived in Florida, but eventually moved to Massachusetts in 2016 to pursue opportunities in the vibrant research environment here. We first lived in Brookline, before moving to Salem in 2020.

Being able to help the community even in a small way through North Shore Indivisible has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The second election of Donald Trump as President shocked and disheartened me, but seeing how hard you all fight for each other and this community has been so inspiring and has reaffirmed to me the inherent goodness of most people. It has been an honor to fight with you all. Thank you so much for being so welcoming to me and my family.

There is undoubtedly much darkness in the world these days, but I genuinely believe that it will not last forever, especially with so many amazing people such as yourselves fighting for the light. I promise to do what I can to continue the fight from Canada as well!

Please stay in touch and let me know if there ever is anything I can do from Canada to help you or this community. You can reach me on Signal (my Signal name is @Jeff.319) or via email (jgrantphd@gmail.com). I will always have a special place for you all and the North Shore in my heart.

With love,

Jeff G
