Protecting Civil Rights and Liberties in Massachusetts

From State House News Service and MASSterList:

“Changes in federal policy have pushed legal boundaries that challenge policies regarding immigration, reproductive rights, international students, transgender youth, the LGBTQIA+ community, and people with disabilities. While the courts often have held firm in protecting due process, more aggressive federal action promises to continue to threaten fundamental rights and liberties, including in blue states like Massachusetts. What can be done on the federal, state and local levels to provide additional protections for vulnerable residents?

Join advocates, policy experts, legislators, and community leaders for an important forum on the outlook for civil rights in Massachusetts.

PANEL DISCUSSION

  • Tatum Pritchard, Director of Litigation, Disability Law Center

  • Carol Rose, Executive Director, ACLU of Massachusetts

  • Joshua Rovenger, Legal Director, GLAD Law

  • Gladys Vega, President & CEO, La Colaborativa

Tickets cost $20. Registration link.
NOTE: Doors open for networking and refreshments at 8 AM. The program will run from 9 - 10:30 AM.”

Messaging for Solidarity: Race Class Narrative with Anat Shenker-Osorio

From Indivisible:
”The opposition regularly uses racial fear as a tool to exploit economic realities and turn people against one another. The Race Class Narrative messaging and analysis help us fight back against these attacks to build solidarity across differences. Host of the Words to Win By podcast and Principal of ASO Communications, Anat Shenker-Osorio examines why certain messages falter where others deliver. She has led research for new messaging on issues ranging from freedom to join together in union to clean energy and from immigrant rights to reforming criminal justice. Anat's original approach through priming experiments, task-based testing and online dial surveys has led to progressive electoral and policy victories across the globe.

Anat delivers her findings packed in snark at venues such as the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Centre for Australian Progress, Irish Migrant Centre, Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation and LUSH International. Her writing and research is profiled in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Boston Globe, Salon, The Guardian and Grist among others. She is the author of "Don't Buy It: The Trouble with Talking Nonsense About the Economy".”

About Good Trouble Lives On

Coined by Congressman John Lewis, "Good Trouble" is the act of coming together to take peaceful, nonviolent action to challenge injustice and create meaningful change. Good Trouble is any action where communities come together, take a stand against wrongdoings, and speak truth to power.

The civil rights leaders of the past have shown us the power of collective action. That’s why on this fifth anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, North Shore Indivisible invites you to join us to Make Good Trouble Together. This day of action is moral reckoning and a continuation of the movement Congressman Lewis helped lead.

Please note: North Shore Indivisible will hold a protest and public art action on July 17th at 4 PM at the Swampscott Memorial as part of its Good Trouble Lives On programming. For details, please see this event listing.

A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Supreme Court Term in Review

Supreme Court Term in Review

From the Brennan Center for Justice:

“The Supreme Court currently faces some of the biggest challenges in its history. The president is determined to break through the constitutional limits of executive power, and the Court’s own public approval hovers near all-time lows. Will the justices stand up for the Constitution on the biggest issue facing the country, the extraordinary executive power grab?

Against this backdrop, the justices are poised to hand down rulings in key cases that will affect millions of people’s lives, including access to healthcare, education, and political representation and the power of federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions. Join us on Wednesday, July 9, at 3 p.m. ET for a virtual conversation with Supreme Court experts about the Court’s decisions this term and what they mean for the rule of law at a time when democracy is under strain.

Whether you follow the Court closely or are looking to understand its role in our system of checks and balances, this discussion will provide essential context for how the Court is working today.

Speakers:

  • Joyce Vance, Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Law, University of Alabama School of Law, Senior Fellow, Brennan Center for Justice

  • Cecillia Wang, National Legal Director, ACLU

  • Kim Wehle, Professor of Law, University of Baltimore School of Law

  • Moderator: Alicia Bannon, Director, Brennan Center Judiciary Program; Editor in Chief, State Court Report”

Solidarity in Action: Training for Systemic Change and Allyship Series Kick-off with Heather McGhee

With the rise of authoritarianism in the US -- and across the globe -- marginalized communities continue to be targeted at an alarming rate. To push back this extremism, we cannot leave them on the front lines alone. If you want to be a better ally to the communities most endangered by the current state of affairs in this country, this is the training series for you!

Heather McGhee is the New York Times bestselling author of The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. A graduate of Yale and the University of California Berkeley School of Law, Heather has testified in Congress, drafted legislation, and developed strategies for organizations and campaigns that won changes to improve the lives of millions. She is the former president of Demos and the current board president of Color of Change and is working to design and promote solutions to inequality in America.

Is the MA Legislature Doing Enough to Thwart a Federal Government Run Amok?

From Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts:

“Washington bombards us daily with threats to everything and everyone we hold dear. Whether it’s massive cuts in federal support, ignoring the fundamental rule of law, sowing fear in our immigrant communities, tackling the climate crisis, endangering reproductive freedom or eliminating the funding of scientific research which drives our economy, they all undermine our ability to provide essential public services and support crucial social programs.  These attacks must be countered.

Are we in MA doing enough to respond to this onslaught? Are we acting quickly and effectively to ensure the continued delivery of vital services, protections and programs?

Our expert panelists are Amy Grunder, Director of State Government Affairs at the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition(MIRA), Carrie Richgels, Policy Manager at Planned Parenthood and Gavi Wolfe, Legislative Director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts (ACLUM). The panel will be moderated by Jonathan Hecht, former state representative and  founding member of the Coalition to Reform our Legislature(CROL).”

Join Indivisible co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin each week, as we carve out an hour to discuss what’s happening and – more importantly – what’s the plan.
