60th Anniversary of the 1965 Freedom Rally

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the 1965 Freedom Rally led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ruth Batson, Alan Gartner, Reverend Virgil Wood, and Dr. Ralph Abernathy that drew over 20,000 people marching on Boston Common to protest racial inequities in housing and schools. To commemorate this anniversary, Embrace Boston, Mass 50501, Indivisible Mass Coalition, the City of Boston and other community partners are hosting a rally. 

Location and schedule:

  • 10 AM: Meet at the Embrace Statue

  • 10:30 - 11 AM: March starts in Copley Square 

  • 11 - 11:30 AM: Rename intersection of Boylston and Charles streets to 1965 Freedom Rally Square

  • 12 - 2:30 PM: Rally on Boston Common (Parkman Bandstand) and participate in collective action opportunities
